This article will explain the default translation changes categories in Bureau Works.
In Bureau Works, when a linguist reviews translations from a previous workflow step and makes changes to any segments in the file, Bureau Works will prompt the reviewer to categorize the change that is being made to the translations, based on a list of 6 categories. These are the categories you can choose from:
- Preferential change (Improved fluency)
- Preferential change (Did not improve fluency)
- Fluency
- Terminology
- Incorrect translation
- Grammar
⚠️ Be aware that how you categorize the changes will have an impact on the quality score of the translator whose work you are reviewing.
Preferential changes (Improved fluency or Did not improve fluency)
- These changes represent the personal preferences of the reviewer and may be exclusively a personal preference or a preference that is also improving the fluency of the translations.
- Preferential changes are not factored in the translator’s quality index assessment.
Fluency
- Fluency affects reading comprehension, making the content sound "weird", "mechanical" or "translated by a machine".
- Even in texts with flawless grammar and spelling, end readers may still have trouble understanding the content if it lacks fluency.
- Literal translations generally lack fluency.
Terminology
Terminology errors occur when the translator:
- Fails to follow the Glossaries
and/or
- Fails to carry out proper research and uses improper terms based on the context
*DNT = Do not translate. In the context of a glossary, this means that the term is kept in the original language in the translation
Incorrect translation
- Translation errors are those that affect the meaning of the target text, changing the message conveyed in the source.
Grammar
- These are errors related to grammar, such as spelling, punctuation, agreement, syntax, pronouns, prepositions, verb tense, compound words, hyphen use, accents, etc.
- All translations must abide by each language’s Standard Conventions.
